Function, Feature, Class

Function, feature, and class (FFC) is a skill that is prevalent in both the VBMAPP and ABLLS-R assessments. It serves as a way to teach a client that there is more to an item than its name and aids in future goals such as describing.

There are many ways to teach this skill. Educators can teach via sorting the items, receptively identifying the item, expressively identifying the item, and answering questions about the item.

Examples of the SD’s that can be used comprise of the following:

Receptive FFC
“Give me something you can (sit on)” – (Client gives the chair) – Function
“Touch something that is (soft)” – (Client touches the teddy bear) – Feature
“Show me an (animal)” – (Client points to the lion) – Class

Expressive FFC (Labelling whilst items/ pictures are present)
“What is something that you can (brush)?” – “hair” – Function
“What are 2 things that are (sticky)?” – “glue & honey” – Feature
“Tell me which items are toys” – “ball, doll, & puzzle” – Class

Intraverbal FFC
“The jacket is a _________” – “clothing” – Function
“Tell me 3 things you can wipe with?” – “towel, cloth, & tissue” – Feature
“What are farm animals?” – “goat & cow” – Class

I have put together a list comprising of different types of functions, features, categories, and have listed some examples of each.

Happy teaching!
