ABA Therapy & Programming

ABA therapy consists of an individualized plan being conducted for the client according to their needs. Therapy is typically conduced 1:1 before looking at smaller groups to improve social skills as per the needs of the client. ABA therapy helps to assist in skills related to communication, play, challenging behaviors, self-help skills. The therapy can be conducted in a variety of settings including home, school, centre, and community depending on the needs of the client.

ABA programming comprises of using solely one or a combination of assessment tools such as the Assessment of Basic Language and Learning Skills – Revised (ABLLS-R), the Verbal Behavior Milestones Assessment and Placement Program (VBMAPP) and/or the Assessment of Functional Living Skills (AFLS), etc.

This serves as a way for the provider to assess whether the client has missing pivotal skills that needs to be targeted.

Programming consists of an individualized treatment plan being written for the client.

Staff Training

Training can occur in both 1:1 setting and/or in group settings.

Staff training has been shown to be effective in increasing learning opportunities for children with ASD (Huskens, 2012) alongside increasing levels of correct implementation (Weinkauf, 2011).

Training can be conducted on multiple topics including:

• Functions of Behavior;
• Proactive Strategies;
• Reactive Strategies;
• Reinforcement;
• Preference Assessments;
• Natural Environment Teaching;
• Prompts and Prompt Fading;
• Task Analysis; etc.

Feel free to contact us should specific training on an unlisted topic be requested.

Caregiver Training

Research has shown that parent training is able to increase a child’s progress in developing language (Drew, 2002). Short-term parent training has a positive impact on the child and family functioning and increases parental self-esteem. Long-term parent training allows parents to achieve complex goals with their children (Dillenburger, 2004). This allows generalization and maintenance of skills taught to a child.

Parent/ Caregiver training will consist of learning about the basic concepts of ABA prior to the training being tailored to the needs of the client (i.e. functional communication training – requesting, labelling; play skills; self- help skills; etc.).

Example of Parent Training Goals:

  • Teaching their child to request for items/activities using a minimum of 2 words;
  • Teaching their child to follow given instructions;
  • Teaching their child to brush their teeth independently;
  • Teaching their child to accept ‘no’;
  • Teaching their child to Interactappropriately with siblings; etc.
