Prepositions

Teaching prepositions is a goal that can be found in various assessments (i.e. ABLLS-R, VB-MAPP). This skill teaches the client locations in comparison to other objects and aids them to understand and provide detailed instructions to others in future.

Examples of prepositions include: on, under, beside, in front, behind, inside, between, etc.

You can teach prepositions utilising both objects (3D) and picture cards (2D).

Receptive Cards
SD: “Give me (preposition)” – Client gives the preposition

Example: When an array of 3 cards (i.e. under, on, beside) are presented to the client and the client is instructed to give the preposition on, the client find the corresponding card and presents the card to the instructor

Receptive Items
With objects, you can utilise toys and/or the natural environment to teach this skill.
SD: “Put (item) (preposition) the (item)
E.g. “Put/ Get/ Give me/ Find the tissue on the table

Example: When an array of 4 items (i.e. car, bear, coins, books) are presented to the client and the client is told to put the car on the books, the client find the items and follows the instructions

Expressive Objects/ Pictures
This can be carried out using simple cards, a picture scene, toys, and/or the natural environment.
SD: “Where is the (item)?” – Client says the preposition
Depending on the ability of the client, you can accept only the preposition (i.e. “on”) or a statement in relation to the other item (i.e. “the book is on the table”).

Example” When a simple card is presented to the client and the client is asked “where is the ball?”, the client will state the preposition “under”/ “it’s under the table”/ “the ball is under the table”.
Example: When a picture scene or toys are set up and the client is asked “where are the coins?”, the client will state the item in relation to the preposition “The coins are on the table”/ “The coins are between the car and the ball”/ “The coins are beside the car”/ “The coins are beside the ball”.

Depending on the ability of the client, you can modify the picture scene/ environment such that the client can include adjectives to describe where an item is (i.e. The coins are beside the orange car”)
